Day 6 (Sunday 2 March) Timanfaya

When we came here on the cruise in 2024 we did not have time to go to Timanfaya and it was something that Mike and Marion really wanted to do.

We knew that there is often a long wait to get in so, as there were no cruise ships in today, we got up early, had breakfast and set off. It was so worth it as we were one of the first in and M&M got a front seat on one of the first 'moon tour' buses. (For info, we had to pay cash to enter the National Park but could use a credit card in the restaurant and shops once inside.)

As always the attractions did not disappoint - from the barbecue heated by the volcano below us to the burning branches and the boiling water gushing above us like a geyser.

We had originally planned to eat lunch in the restaurant but instead we had a hot chocolate and snack before moving on to see the camels.

We then went to the Charco Verde at El Golfo - a inland lagoon with a striking green colour caused by algae. We had been here many years ago and weren't that impressed, but there is now a walkway and viewing point and visitors are no longer allowed to walk down to the water's edge.

After a drive through El Golfo itself we then went back to Puerto Calero for lunch before returning to the hotel for a rest and a well-earned beer for Graeme.

NOTE: considered one of the wonders of nature on Lanzarote, the Charco Verde also known as Charco de los Clicos, Lago Verde or El Golfo in Lanzarote, is green because of the presence of a large amount of algae. This, combined with sulphur minerals and the large amount of unique microorganisms that inhabit this place all contribute to its distinctive green hue and this algae flourishes in the unique conditions of the volcanic crater where the lagoon is situated.
